Multiply your Results: 4 things to consider when hiring a coach

Saturated

Coaches are everywhere. From business coaches to fitness coaches, and even pet-care coaches. If you have a need there is someone out there that claims to be able to help you with it. The market is saturated with coaches and so it’s difficult to know where to start when looking for someone to help you go to the next level. Below are four things you should consider when looking for a coach.

Is your coach certified?

Credentials matter and that is especially true in a market that is saturated with “experts” in everything. Whenever you are considering hiring a coach, find out if they have been through a recognized coaching skills assessment. The most well-known certificate out there is with the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and they are constantly adjusting the process to certify only the most qualified coaches.

What experience does your coach bring to the conversation?

Any certified coach will be able to create value in any of the areas I’m about to mention, but more experience either in a niche market or in coaching will create better results for you. With so many coaches out there, the client has the best opportunity to find a coach that fits their niche. Choosing which coach can seem overwhelming, but you can usually break coaching down into three buckets; life coaching, businesses coaching, and executive coaching.

If you are wanting to take steps in your personal life - things like you want to work out more, you need help with scheduling, or you would like to write a memoir then consider hiring a life coach. If you are a team leader and work with people in an organization or if you need help with financials or with hiring then consider getting a business coach. Lastly, if you are C-level executive and oversee multiple teams and organization culture, spinning plates that impact multiple stakeholders get an executive coach. Find out how many clients your coach has coached and what those clients were like before signing the contract.

How professional is your coach?

While there are great coaches out there that can help clients get results who haven’t yet invested in their professional side, a client can step into a coaching relationship with greater confidence if a coach has taken the time to invest in their professional side. Do they have a website? What does that website demonstrate about the coach? Have they invested in creating content? What does their LinkedIn platform show? All these demonstrate investment into coaching from the coach, which usually translates into greater investment in their clients.

What are their metrics?

Knowing the ROI (Return on Investment) you will be getting from working with a coach can be very hard to measure, so it’s important that you find a coach that isn’t just “fluffy” in what they say they can do. What data do they have to demonstrate the kind of return and results you’re after? Look at their statistics. For instance, if you are a nonprofit and need to raise funds, what kind of results has your coach had with clients who needed the same thing? Or if you’re an executive and you need to develop a training system to get your team to the next level, can your coach give examples of results they’ve had building systems of development with previous clients? Make your coach prove themselves and make them tell you what they measure as success. It’ll build your confidence.

Bonus: What does your coach charge?

Coaching really works and coaches know the kinds of results they can bring and also how to measure those results so that they can give their clients the best value for their money, so don’t just go after the lowest priced coach. While it can be tempting to look at hiring a coach as an expense, it’s actually an investment. If your coach can give 2x the results or even 10x the results that you would normally get then the return is worth the pay. The coaches that have a certification and experience know what kind of ROI they can bring for their clients. If your coach believes in their services, their cost will reflect that, and paying for their services will build confidence in you as you begin the journey with them.
